Questions about
your Urostomy
Will I be able to control the flow or
urine from my stoma?
No. Your stoma has no nerve supply or muscles, so it cannot
be voluntarily controlled as the bladder can. The ileal conduit is
simply a tube draining urine from the kidneys, usually expelling
urine at 20-30 second intervals. Instead of the bladder, your
urostomy pouch collects this urine until it is convenient to empty
it.
What kind of pouch will I have?
Your Stoma Care Nurse will help you decide which pouch will suit
you best initially, and you'll be taught how to manage that
particular type. Later on you may prefer to try a different type of
pouch. Your Stoma Care Nurse will gladly explain what is available
and what meets your individual needs.
Will anyone notice that I'm wearing a pouch?
No. You may be conscious of your stoma, but others will not notice
it. In general, modern appliances are very discreet. They're flat,
odour-proof, rustle-free and undetectable under most ordinary
clothes. Many people find they can even wear tight jeans without
anyone noticing they're wearing a bag, but it will depend on the
size and position of your individual stoma (and the style of clothes
you wear).
What sort of bag should I use?
With a urostomy you will need to use a bag with a tap at the bottom
to enable you to let the urine out. There are a number of different
bags available and your stoma care nurse will be able help you
choose the most appropriate sort for you Which will be kind
to your skin, light-weight, leakproof and odourproof which means
that they will be virtually undetectable to anyone else. Bags are
available in a variety of sizes to suit your specific needs.
