Questions About Surgery

When will I be ready to leave hospital?
The length of hospital stay varies from a few days to a couple of weeks. This allows you the time to rest and recover from the operation, and to learn how to look after your stoma before you go home.

What about continuing care?
When you leave hospital your Family Doctor will be notified and given details of your operation.
Within a few days of arriving home you may be visited by your Stoma Care Nurse or the District Nurse. It's their job to help you with any problems you may encounter and to give continuing support and care.

In this way the link you have already formed with Stoma Care Nurse can continue. You will be encouraged to telephone her with any questions, and told about follow-up appointments.
Just remember you are not alone, the Wessex Urology Support Group is run by people with a wide range of knowledge, and we are always pleased to help in any way we can.

What about hospital check-ups?

You'll need to visit your hospital's Out Patient Department (or Stoma Clinic, if there is one) for the occasional check-up
Your first appointment will probably be 4 to 6 weeks after you return home, then at 3 to 6 monthly intervals. Eventually you'll be seen just once a year for a routine check up.
These check-ups are nothing to worry about. They're just to make sure that all is well and to give you the chance to mention any problem with your stoma or appliance.
